How to Fix an Aging Face
How Our Face Ages How your face ages, is a multifactorial process that happens over a number of years. At our Aesthetic Spa we always explain the ageing process to our clients during the consultation. This helps them appreciate the changes involved and how we can best help address their aging concerns. In this blog we are going to take a stepwise aesthetic approach towards restoring a youthful face. There are 3 layers of the face involved in facial ageing. This includes: Fat & Connective tissue Muscle Skin As all the layers go through ageing differently, they need addressing specifically to rejuvenate your face. Let’s look at the main areas where this is relevant: Fat & Connective Tissue The fat pads are stuck to the bones and are responsible for the fullness seen in a young face. They help create smooth transitions from one area to the next. As we age, these fat pads go through 2 changes. Firstly, they decrease in volume. Secondly, they move downwards with gravity. The eye socket becomes more pronounced and sunken resulting in a tired and worn-out look. Your cheekbone muscles atrophy causing your cheeks to flatten. You may look deflated as you lose the lovely curvature seen in a youthful face. Over time as facial movement continues the loss of fat pads is responsible for creating: Deep skin creases Skin grooves Hollowness Fullness in the wrong place This results in the apple of the cheeks appearing flattened, folds becoming more pronounced and the lower face increasing in volume. Another important feature is our lips. As we age, our lips turn inwards, lose volume and definition. Lines appear around the mouth and the corners of the mouth may be downturned. Look at dermal filler or Exion Face to build fuller lips. Fine line and wrinkles are caused by multiple factors. One factor is the muscle layer. The muscles of the face are in constant motion from the time we are born. They help us communicate as we smile, cry, eat, talk, grimace, shout, frown, and so on. In our late twenties, we get ‘dynamic’ lines (wrinkles) which are lines that appear when we make certain movements such as frown, smile or raise our eyebrows. In some areas such as under the eyes, the ageing muscles are so thin that they allow ‘herniation’ or poking out of structures beneath. Muscles Two ways to improve the youthful muscle movement and tone is with Emface or Neuro Tox such as Botox or Jeuveau. When we consult a client, we look at specific signs and needs to when and where to use these services. Repetitive muscles contractions over time combined with loss of connective tissues causes wrinkling in the superficial skin layers. Neuro Toxin works by temporarily disrupting the connections between the nerves and the muscles. This softens the wrinkles and makes a smoother youthful appearance. When we add an even more natural approach to build the underlying muscles, we naturally volumize the skin a youthful appears. See image below to show how the aging face transitions. When the wrinkles have become fixed and present at rest (static lines), the response is not good. They do however get softer with repeated treatments. Skin The skin undergoes changes with ageing. We start losing collagen in our thirties and the skin starts to lose its elasticity and water holding capacity. This results in the classic appearance of rough, uneven, loose, dry and saggy skin with deep wrinkles. Because the skin is the most superficial layer of our face this layer can cause the most dramatic negative effects At our office Pure Health Aesthetics and Wellness we have many services to address all appearances of the skin and turn those negative ageing appearances into a thing of the past. The shape of the face changes with aging. The overall effect is the loss of the inverted triangle of youth and results in the triangle or square of the aged face. Depicted in this image. By addressing these changes will give the ultimate results. Addressing facial changes can be completed using Dermal Fillers. During our consultation, the approach is to consider all layers of the face and treat where necessary starting with the scaffolding. We can choose dermal fillers to fill deficits, which is a quick and lasting over a year sometimes. However, if you are looking for a longer term even more natural result, we can use Radio Frequency Microneedling or Exion Face. Both have proven to help the body build back collagen and hyaluronic acid. These are part of the connective tissue it naturally attracts water and can hold up the skin. This is how they have a plumping effect on the face. With our Dermal Fillers minor changes are visible immediately after treatment. With Exion and RF+Microneedling it can take several weeks for the body to build connective tissue. Once the scaffolding has been addressed, we would consider looking into the muscular layer of the face. Skin Rejuvenation Skin laxity can be addressed with medical skincare or skin rejuvenation treatments like injectable skin boosters, microneedling, chemical skin peels in Laser resurfacing using the Ultra laser. Clients often come to us asking to fill a line here or there an Aesthetic and Wellness office, it’s our duty to educate them so that they may get the results they are truly expecting. Once we have discussed what to use, where to use it and how to get the look and feel of what you are looking for, we design a customized treatment plan for the client.
