FAQ's of Cosmetic Fillers
What makes the RHA Collection so special?
RHA Collection is a range of fillers that contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in our body and can retain a lot of water. HA fillers can hydrate and volumize the skin, smooth out wrinkles and folds, and enhance facial contours. RHA fillers are specially designed to look exceptionally natural, even when your face moves or makes expressions. They are the only fillers approved by the FDA to treat dynamic facial lines and creases that form as a result of facial expressions.
RHA stands for “Resilient Hyaluronic Acid,” which means it is more similar to the natural HA in your body than conventional fillers. RHA fillers have longer HA chains with less crosslinking, which makes them more flexible and adaptable. Unlike fillers with shorter HA chains, RHA fillers can maintain a natural appearance and avoid stiffness, regardless of facial movement.
What are the Pros of RHA Collection?
Pros:
- Resilient hyaluronic acid fillers are designed to be more like natural HA, creating results that adapt well to facial movements.
- Results are instant—you’ll see your new look as soon as your provider injects the dermal filler.
- While results are temporary (as with other HA-based fillers), they last longer than many hyaluronic acid fillers on the market—up to 15 months. This makes the RHA Collection a good treatment option for someone who wants results with some staying power.
- If you don’t like your results or have a complication, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase within 24 hours.
- RHA fillers contain lidocaine, to help reduce discomfort during the injection process.
- Studies suggest that the use of hyaluronic acid fillers stimulates your body’s fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen production. This means that regular use of hyaluronic acid fillers may lead to firmer-looking skin over time.
What are the Cons of RHA Collection?
- Bruising and swelling are common after dermal filler treatment (especially with lip fillers), though these side effects can be minimized with careful planning.
- Though fillers can add volume and correct deep folds, not all skin laxity can be improved with injectable filler. If sagging skin is your primary concern, talk with your provider about skin tightening options.
- The RHA Collection is currently only offered at select providers’ offices. However, those who do currently offer RHA fillers were hand-selected by Revance because they’re highly skilled physicians with exceptional aesthetic outcomes. The quality of your results will directly correlate with the skill and experience of your injector, and this selectivity increases your likelihood of seeing results that match your expectations.
What are the Types of RHA Fillers?
In the United States, four RHA fillers are available, each with different degrees of crosslinking.
- RHA 2 is a flexible dermal filler that the FDA has approved for correcting moderate folds. It can smooth the skin surface and treat radial cheek lines (or “accordion lines”) and perioral or lipstick lines. It is also suitable for lip augmentation and under-eye areas.
- RHA 3 is a bit firmer and can treat moderate to severe facial folds. Providers use it to smooth moderate nasolabial folds (smile lines) and oral commissures (the corners of the mouth).
- RHA 4 is the firmest of the three. It is designed for injection into the deep dermis or the superficial subcutaneous tissue. It is the best RHA filler for deep wrinkles and severe folds, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It can also enhance the chin and jawline.
- RHA Redensity, the newest formula in the line with FDA approval, is specially designed for moderate to severe perioral wrinkles—the fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and lips, also known as marionette lines, barcode lines, smoker lines, or lipstick lines.
What to Expect During your RHA Filler Treatment
At Pure Health as typical facial filler treatment with products from the RHA Collection of fillers takes about 30 minutes to an hour for your first visit.
Before the filler injection, you will consult with your provider to discuss your desired outcome and any questions you may have.
Since these fillers target dynamic wrinkles, your provider may ask you to make different facial expressions to determine the optimal placement of the filler.
After agreeing on a treatment plan (which may involve various fillers or multiple sessions, depending on your goals), you will receive an approximate cost estimate.
Your provider will then clean the area(s) to be treated with alcohol and may apply a numbing cream or another topical anesthetic to reduce sensation. Although the fillers contain lidocaine to help minimize discomfort, some people prefer extra pain relief—especially for lip injections, as the lips have many more nerve endings than other parts of the face.
Finally, your provider will inject the dermal filler slowly and carefully, using either an ultra-fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula.
How Long do RHA Fillers Last?
The duration of RHA Collection filler results may differ for each individual. The factors that affect how long hyaluronic acid filler lasts include the location of the filler injection (facial areas with more movement tend to use up filler quicker), your metabolism, and your body’s reaction.
However, RHA fillers are among the most long-lasting hyaluronic acid fillers in the U.S.: they can maintain their results for up to 15 months.
Almost all other hyaluronic acid fillers last for up to a year, except for Juvéderm Voluma, which can last for up to two years.
What are some other Alternatives to RHA Fillers?
The RHA Collection is not the only brand of HA fillers. Restylane, Juvéderm, and Belotero are some other brands that offer hyaluronic acid fillers with different viscosities to suit different aesthetic needs.
However, RHA fillers may last longer and look more natural than these other brands, as they adapt better to your facial movements.
You can also choose fillers that use ingredients other than hyaluronic acid, such as biostimulatory fillers. These include Sculptra Aesthetic, which contains poly-L-lactic acid, and Bellafill, which contains bovine collagen and polymethyl methacrylate microspheres. These fillers stimulate your body to produce more collagen, which can firm up your skin for a long time.
Radiesse is another filler that uses calcium hydroxylapatite to add volume to your skin. However, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, these fillers cannot be dissolved or reversed if you are unhappy with the results or change your mind. You should consider this factor before choosing a filler for your face.
